Wendy and Jeff Mouton celebrate their silver-level certification
in Lafayette.
Jeff and Wendy Moutons' property is located in Lafayette in a traditional neighborhood with a small yard. Jeff has always been interested in plants, focusing on gingers, salvias, cactus, succulents, and a few natives. When their family moved into this home 12 years ago, they transplanted many of the plants from their downtown location. One of those is Indian Pink (Spigelia marilandica), and it helped to spark Jeff's interest in natives. He has been slowly purchasing and sourcing more native plants. The opening of The Urban Naturalist made purchasing natives more accessible. As he learned more from the owner and acquired more, he started to see that those plants did better in the yard and attracted various insects, butterflies, and birds. The quest for knowledge continues and Jeff recently completed the Master Naturalist program. Currently with the great choices of ANPP plants, he is purchasing more natives and pulling up non-natives. His ultimate goal is to have a yard primarily planted with natives, to create an ecosystem which attracts a variety of insects, butterflies and birds, while requiring limited maintenance.
