Butterfly Count is a beautifully written and illustrated children’s book that
introduces students to a citizen science project sponsored by the North American
Butterfly Association. The book is recommended for ages 4 to 8 and has a
reading level of 4.1 (4th grade, 1 month).
A young girl and her mother attend the annual Fourth of July butterfly count at a
prairie restoration. As they search for the Royal Fritillary, they find many
butterflies to count, but the Royal eludes them until a chance discovery.
