Second Louisiana Certified Habitat! Kim and Libby Nehrbass

ANPP congratulates the Nehrbasses of Lafayette for their second Louisiana

Certified Habitat! Although this property lies in a suburban area behind Brookshire

Gardens, it borders the Vermillion River and remains relatively undeveloped.

Because it partially adjoins the dedicated green space behind Edgewater Estates,

its three-plus acres extend a small natural corridor along the bayou, maybe 20

acres all together. It is their intention to protect the existing native habitat and to

add in as many additional native plants as they can to support the wildlife that live

and visit there.

Situated on a high point along the bayou, the property has both forest and

wetland elements, with a ravine and a coulee running through it. Some of the

creatures they see include wood ducks, barred owls, hawks, armadillos,

possums, raccoons, rabbits, and foxes, with an occasional bobcat and coyote.

Plant species include red maple, black cherry, hornbeam, southern magnolia,

several kinds of oak, cypress, cedar, American beautyberry, crossvine, and

arrowwood viburnum. They have added quite a few wildflowers along the sunnier

borders. "We hope that by certifying the habitat, we can emphasize its importance

as a protected space and encourage others to understand the value of integrating

and cultivating such spaces into our urban landscapes."

Thank you, Kim and Libby, for greauxing native!
