Nicole DeJean lives in Broussard with Paul, her husband of 25 years. Together, they own and steward seven acres of gold-certified habitat in Broussard with a focus on conservation. Since living on the property, Nicole and Paul have removed at least an acre of invasive Chinese Privet, incorporated native plantings, preserved existing native flora, and implemented an extensive water management system which includes the use of prairie plants to manage flood water. One of their greatest achievements is the now 2 acre prairie planting which allows them to watch brilliant seasonal changes and diverse wildlife activity.
Growing up with her grandparents, Nicole was exposed to the connection that plants create between people especially with what her family called “pass-along plants.” There wasn’t a place for scientific or proper names, plants were remembered with the name of the person who gave them to you. The Gloriosa vine was a “Mrs. Bertrand Lily” and the green rose in the garden was “MawMaw’s rose.” Plants were given freely, with love for the person and the plant.
In keeping with community through plants, Nicole has been inspired by the community that exists amongst the ANPP membership. Nicole credits her friends and mentors at ANPP with her understanding of native plants and "right plant, right place" approach to gardening.
During her involvement with ANPP, Nicole has had the pleasure of serving on the Board of Directors and you can frequently see her cashiering at plant sales. To date, her proudest achievement with ANPP is the development of the Supported Satellite Grower Program, which creates opportunities for people with disabilities by providing inclusive, hands-on growing experience with native plants. Through this program, Nicole was able to merge her professional expertise with her love of native plants. While the program has seen great success, Nicole anticipates expanding its reach.
