Native Plant Advocate of the Month: Marcus Descant

Marcus Descant, known as the Urban Naturalist, is a Louisiana native who has cultivated a passion for gardening and environmental sustainability in the Lafayette area.

Without formal training, Marcus learned through experience, emphasizing the importance of experimentation and learning from mistakes. He founded the Urban Naturalist in 2011, a sustainable nursery specializing in native and heirloom plants, focusing on creating holistic ecosystems that support local wildlife and feed people. His work promotes sustainable urban landscapes and educates people on the value of native plants and reducing waste. In addition to his vegetables and herbs, he grows many species of native plants using local ecotype seed whenever possible.

Marcus has contributed to several public installations in Lafayette, showcasing his dedication to native plants and sustainable landscapes. Notable projects include the Meche’s “Living Room” Garden, which transformed a public space into a thriving garden filled with native and edible plants, promoting biodiversity and community engagement. He also led efforts to plant native trees and plants in local parks, inviting volunteers to participate in creating healthier ecosystems for wildlife and improving public green spaces. One of his notable projects is the Lafayette Victory Garden, located at the corner of Olivier and South Pierce Streets. This community-driven initiative emphasizes sustainability, edible landscaping, and the use of native plants. The garden serves as an educational space, inspiring residents to grow their own food while fostering biodiversity. By integrating these principles, Marcus has helped transform the Victory Garden into a thriving example of urban ecological design.

Thank you, Marcus, for greauxing native! We appreciate all that you do.
