Mavis was raised with her 6 sisters on this beloved property, and she has lived
here much of her later adult life. Of the 80 acres she owns, much is in soybean
cultivation, but a few acres where her home is still has the stately oak, mulberry,
persimmon, and pecan trees, and beloved heirloom plants her mother planted
here. Since joining the Acadiana Native Plant Project, she has added numerous
native plants under her live oaks, like Indian pink, mountain mints, Turks cap,
beautyberry, and palmetto. Her mamou must be the most beautiful we've seen so
far this year. Mavis also cultivates a large area of culturally important crops like
brown cotton and gourds.
