This beautiful perennial blooms all summer with dark blue to white tubular flowers.
The flowers have a powdery or “mealy” appearance. It grows 2 to 3 feet tall and
loves the sun. This plant is in the mint family. Once established, additional water
is not needed and is considered drought tolerant. The snow had no impact on this
plant. Deadheading encourages blooming. This plant can be cut back to
encourage a bushier growth form and stays in clumps. This plant can be used as
a perennial border and is loved as a nectar plant by butterflies, bees, and
hummingbirds. The flowers have a light fragrance and make good cut flowers.
This plant propagates easily from seed and stem cuttings. The seeds can be
collected from the capsules as they dry. Be sure to spread them out in an area to
dry before placing in a paper envelope or bag. The seed needs light to germinate,
so place on the surface of the soil. This plant responds well to pruning mid-
summer. -Louise Prejean
