Ecologist Patti Holland is the Native Plant Promoter of the month.
This month we salute ecologist Patti Holland. Patti trained as a wildlife biologist and is retired from US Fish and Wildlife Service. She is former president of the TECHE project (Teche Ecology, Culture, and History Education Project) and now volunteers as a council member. Patti is an avid birder and has landscaped her home to provide habitat for a wide range of birds including wetland, prairie, forest and pollinator garden, qualifying as a gold-level Louisiana Certified Habitat. The TECHE project is working to make the Bayou Teche whole again through action and education about its ecology, culture and history. Through the group’s efforts, Bayou Teche was designated as Louisiana’s only National Water Trail in 2015. Access to the bayou, which runs 135 miles from Port Barre to Berwick through four parishes has a total of 13 access point. There is paddle access to the bayou in spans as short as 6 miles and as long as 12 miles. ANPP partnered with TECHE project, BVPA, and Trees Acadiana for bankline stabilization workshops to introduce the public and bayou landowners to methods to prevent shoreline erosion and improve water quality. Native plantings are highly effective tool for bankline stabilization. This information is available in a document entitled “Bankline Management Guide” written by Patti and available at techeproject.org/bank-line-restoration/.
